Our Story


Established in 2016 although the idea was developed some years before. We already had a long association with the town of Cromarty, the appeal was the climate, the water, the Cromarty Firth and the people of this place.

Located on the shores of the Cromarty Firth by the Cromarty to Nigg Ferry slipway, an historic ferry crossing that has operated for some hundreds of years. The North Sutor and South Sutor, the headlands that protect the firth, are clearly visible from our roasting facility.

We are located in the original Old Slaughterhouse.

Who’s Involved

Tony Vandyke

Founder, Equity Owner and Managing Director at Vandyke Bros.

Tony first entered specialty coffee over a decade ago, shortly afterwards establishing the award winning Vandyke Brothers Specialty Coffee roastery and wholesale operation. He has forged extensive relationships in the specialty coffee industry in the UK and Australia. Tony has SCA advanced qualifications and still loves exploring all elements of the specialty coffee world and developing our roasting operations and customers.

Tony was previously in corporate finance and strategy roles with extensive experience in multiple industry sectors and geographies. He has run small to very large acquisition, divestment and joint venture processes, often complex and many concurrently.

Damian Blackburn

Equity Owner and Advisor to Vandyke Bros.

We are delighted to have Damian as a key element in Vandyke Bros. Damian is a founding partner and Director in Dark Woods Coffee, with expertise in roasting, coffee sourcing and ethical initiatives. His role at Dark Woods has had a direct impact in making them one of the most recognised and awarded, specialty coffee roasters in the UK.

Damian has spent 20 years honing his skills as a roaster and buyer of speciality coffee. Previously the coffee buyer and head of quality and retail for Bolling Coffee, for whom he developed and looked after the award winning Grumpy Mule brand, Damian has travelled extensively to origin, and has been a judge for both Cup of Excellence and Best of Panama competitions. The long term relationships he has forged both at origin, and in UK green coffee sourcing, give us a strong position in specialty coffee.

Nick Brian

Team Member and Advisor to Vandyke Bros.

Much of his career has been spent in advertising and communications in a number of roles, culminating in over 10 years as first COO and then Global MD of a group of specialist companies within the global Havas organisation.

Since leaving Havas, Nick has grown his own consultancy business year on year, specialising in a portfolio of clients requiring commercial leadership through a period of major, planned growth.  These investments are in the region of hundreds of millions of pounds, with ongoing funds already identified.

Arthur Bird

Advisor and Business Mentor to Vandyke Bros.

Arthur has a long-standing family history with Cromarty. He has been a keen observer and commentator on our coffee roasting and retail service offering from our early days in the town. He has worked in large scale Government funded, agro-industrial irrigation programmes across Africa and Latin America. He spent twenty years as a management consultant working in the UK, Europe and the USA. His primary focus was on service delivery and client engagement. He specialised in change management and team-based working, across engineering, manufacturing, telecommunications and latterly education.

Understanding how businesses work has always been an interest area. During the course of his time with Vandyke Bros he regularly asks the questions What? Why? How and When? He is focussed on our achievements, results and customer performance.
